Tattoo onsen Okinawa: 22 spring sources, 2 sourced tattoo-OK entries, and what actually exists
Okinawa is not an onsen destination, and the one onsen hotel most visitors have heard of refuses tattoos in writing. The prefecture had 22 hot-spring sources in the Ministry of the Environment's FY2024 count, against 5,094 in Oita. What exists for a tattooed visitor is a small set of private saunas and hotel pools, and this guide lists the ones whose own page says so, with the date we read it.

Facility policies change. Every row in the table links to the facility's own page and shows the date we opened it. One Okinawa entry's site was unreachable on 2026-09-12; that is stated in the row rather than hidden.
Why Okinawa has so few onsen, in numbers
The Ministry of the Environment publishes a prefecture-by-prefecture table of hot-spring use every year. The FY2024 edition, dated as of 2025-03-31, gives the scale of the gap.

Okinawa's springs are drilled, not volcanic, and nearly all of them feed a single hotel or resort bath. That is why "tattoo onsen Okinawa" produces so few real results: there are few onsen of any kind, and the ones that exist are hotel operations that set hotel rules. The bathing culture that fills the gap on the main island is the pool, the private sauna and the in-room bath.
What actually exists: the sourced entries
The table includes only facilities whose own site states a tattoo policy. Directory sites that list Okinawa resorts as tattoo-friendly on the strength of a visitor's report are not used as evidence.

Two things stand out. The only true onsen in the table is the refusal. And the tattoo-OK entries are both places where the tattoo is visible to nobody who has not chosen to be there: a private sauna room, or a pool where swimwear is worn anyway. That pattern holds across Japan; it is simply more visible in Okinawa because there is so little else.
How to plan a bath in Okinawa with a tattoo
- Decide what you actually want. If it is heat and cold water, a private sauna in Naha solves it and the operator has said yes. If it is a hot-spring soak in a shared bath, Okinawa is the wrong island for it without a cover.
- Check your hotel's own bath page before booking. Resort hotels with a large bath (大浴場) publish their rule on the hot-spring or facilities page more often than not. The Senagajima page is the model: policy, price and hours in one place.
- Do not assume a resort pool follows the bath's rule. Aqua Citta's pool notice is separate from any bath rule. A hotel can refuse tattoos in its onsen and admit them in its pool, or the reverse; read both pages.
- If the page is silent, email. Okinawa hotels answer in English routinely. Ask two questions: whether tattoos are accepted in the large bath, and whether a cover sticker changes the answer.
- Keep the receipt of your check. Screenshot the page with the date. If the rule at the door differs, you at least know the policy changed rather than that you misread it.

If the point of the trip is onsen, the nearest place with a large, verifiable set of tattoo-OK baths is Beppu in Oita, a short flight from Naha. Beppu's city tourism site maintains a tag page for tattoo-permitted facilities, and our verified list carries 33 Beppu entries sourced from it, each with the individual facility page and a check date of 2026-08-03 or 2026-08-04. They include the municipal Takegawara and Kannawa steam baths and a long list of neighbourhood baths. That is a different trip, but it is the honest answer to "where can I soak without covering up".

A private sauna, where the room is yours and the operator has said tattoos are fine (Totonoi Labo in Kumoji is in our list; its site was unreachable on 2026-09-12, so confirm before going), a hotel pool that publishes a tattoo-OK notice (Hotel Aqua Citta Naha), or your own hotel's in-room bath. For a hot-spring bath without a cover, the nearest verified cluster is Beppu in Oita, with 33 tattoo-OK entries on the city tourism site.
