The short answer

• Hakone Yuryo (Tonosawa): tattoos accepted since 2025-04-01, 19 private open-air rooms, ¥10,400 to ¥15,400 per room per 120 minutes, book online up to 15:00 the day before.
• Yama no Chaya (Tonosawa): FAQ answer is yes, but all baths are for overnight guests; the private gorge bath is ¥5,500 for 45 minutes, first-come, 8 groups a day.
• Yunessun Mori no Yu and Hotel Mori no Kaze Sengokuhara: entry only with the facility's cover stickers. A private room does not remove that rule.
• Tenzan (Yumoto): the FAQ allows a single tattooed visitor, refuses groups of tattooed visitors, and excludes tattooed guests from its private Oku no Yu.

Policies change. Every row in the tables below has a source link and the date we opened it. "Kashikiri" (貸切) means a bath rented to one party for a fixed time; it is not automatically a tattoo exemption.

Which Hakone baths state their tattoo policy on their own site

The table is limited to facilities whose official page says something about tattoos. Facilities that are silent are not listed as tattoo-friendly here, because silence is not permission. That is also how the app labels them: "unconfirmed", not "OK".

How kashikiri baths work in Hakone, using the official pages

A kashikiri bath is rented to one party for a fixed slot. The price is per room, not per person, so two people pay the same as four up to the room's capacity. The two Hakone facilities that publish their private-bath terms run very different systems.

Booking pitfalls that come from the official pages

1. "Private" does not override a cover rule. Mori no Kaze Sengokuhara and Yunessun Mori no Yu admit tattoos only under stickers. Neither page says a private room changes that. Assume it does not unless the facility writes it down.
2. The 15:00 cut-off at Hakone Yuryo. Online reservations close at 15:00 the day before. If you decide on the morning of your trip, you will be calling, and the rooms may be gone on weekends.
3. Guests-only baths. Yama no Chaya is a yes in the FAQ, but its baths are closed to day visitors. A same-day walk-in gets nothing.
4. Group rules. Tenzan's FAQ distinguishes one tattooed visitor from several. A group of tattooed friends can be refused even though one of them alone would be admitted.
5. Dynamic pricing. Yunessun's price page lists ¥1,500 for an adult at Mori no Yu on its "A" calendar and states that B and C dates cost more. The cover stickers are an additional paid item.
6. Check the date on the notice, not just the wording. Yunessun's rule started 2025-10-01 and Mori no Kaze's trial started 2024-07-01. Trials can end. Reading the notice date tells you how settled the policy is.

What "tattoo-friendly" lists often get wrong about Hakone

Directory sites tend to list every ryokan with a private bath as tattoo-friendly, on the logic that nobody will see you. That logic fails at the front desk when the facility has a written cover rule, and it fails at guests-only facilities when you arrive without a booking. It also ages badly: Hakone Yuryo's change on 2025-04-01 turned a "no" into a "yes", and Yunessun's notice on 2025-10-01 turned a "yes with caveats" into a strict two-sticker rule. A list without dates cannot tell you which direction a facility moved.

The practical rule for Hakone: open the facility's own page, look for the words タトゥー or 刺青, and read the date. If the page is silent, phone or email before you travel. At most other Hakone facilities a private room does not change the rule: check the facility's own page first.
